Job Title: Senior Development Manager

Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director

Hours:  40 hrs/week, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Exempt; Full-time

Thrive DC is an organization providing a full array of support and services to the economically vulnerable and homeless population in Washington DC. The Development Manager position is a key job within our hands-on, service-oriented executive team.

The Senior Development Manager is responsible for creating the overall vision and strategy for the growth of annual revenue and managing all development efforts. . This individual will lead a strategic program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a diversified base of funding sources and donors to expand support for the organization. The Senior Development Manager will ensure that these efforts are integrated with and supported by Thrive DC’s marketing efforts, volunteer program, and community outreach and education.

Major Responsibilities:

Program Leadership

  • Create and execute fundraising plan that aligns with strategic objectives set by the Board of Directors and increases revenue from corporate, government, foundation, religious, community, and individual source
  • Act as development liaison with the Executive Director, Development and Marketing Committees to ensure that organizational fundraising, marketing, and communications goals are being met
  • Coordinate with Executive Director, Director of Social Services, and other relevant staff to develop appropriate budgets and fundraising targets, plan new program initiatives, and ensure the development and maintenance of regular program evaluation, financial accountability and transparency, and other items critical to organization’s development efforts
  • Supervise Community Relations and Volunteer Coordinator and hire, train, and supervise Development Assistant, interns, and volunteers.

Fundraising

  • Manage Thrive DC’s foundation relations program, identifying and researching new foundations and grant opportunities, developing and writing proposals, cultivating grant-maker relationships, and preparing associated reports, acknowledgements, and schedules
  • Manage Thrive DC’s individual and corporate donor program to create a solid base of committed donors, creating a comprehensive plan that integrates direct mail, prospect research, major donor cultivation, fundraising events, and community outreach Manage public and government funding,  including identify new public funding prospects,  developing proposals, cultivating public and community relationships, and preparing associated reports
  • Strengthen fundraising infrastructure, ensuring that donor, volunteer and activity records are complete and accurate both in the paper files and database
  • Create and manage all data needed to assess and inform fundraising efforts and targets.  This includes designing and running regular reports (monthly/quarterly/annual) from database to analyze data and provide insights to various stakeholders.

  • Works with Volunteer and Community Relations Manager to effectively integrate development efforts with volunteer and donor cultivation activities.
  • Collaborates with Community Relations Dept. and Executive Director to grow and maximize communications and marketing strategies.
  • Oversee meaningful relationships with corporations, community groups, and religious organizations so that they are involved and giving to Thrive DC in a variety of capacities.
  • Oversee the development, design and production of organizational communications, publications, mailings, and brochures.
  • Develop, oversee  and implement  communications strategies to increase organizational visibility and maximize public profile.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability and willingness to do occasional physical labor including lifting, carrying, cleaning, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications (required): Bachelor’s degree; 5-7 or more (cumulative) years of related development or nonprofit experience.  Demonstrated interest in the not-for-profit sector and strong interest in development, social justice, and Thrive DC’s mission.

Excellent grant writing skills. Solid knowledge of fundraising strategy and experience with corporate, foundation, and individual donor fundraising. Experience coordinating special events. Strong understanding of marketing and communication, and excellent writing skills. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced setting. Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.).

Additional skills and experience (highly desirable): Master’s Degree in nonprofit management or other related field. Familiarity with database development and management required; graphic design and/or website design experience a plus.
