Thrive DC is excited to announce that on November 1, 2009, we changed locations—offering our clients the same great services in a space that has been specifically designed to best meet the needs of the people we serve.

For the last 30 years, Thrive DC has proudly served the Downtown DC community and would like to thank First Congregational Church for having made this a possibility. However, after a year and a half of actively searching for a new home, it is with both sadness for leaving the downtown community and excitement in joining the Columbia Heights neighborhood that we will be moving into a space at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church. St. Stephen’s is a perfect fit in that it fully supports our philosophy of empowering individuals to gain mental, emotional, and physical stability while taking positive steps toward achieving their independence and ending their homelessness.

The Dinner Program for Homeless Women officially transitioned to Thrive DC on Friday, February 27 at Evolution: New Perspectives on DC’s Homeless. Thrive DC began in 1979 as the Dinner Program for Homeless Women (DPHW); however, over the past decade, our organization has evolved to become far more than just a soup kitchen. Thrive DC welcomes all men and women in need who come through its doors and provides them with a host of resources including: twice daily meals; free showers and laundry; computer, mail, and telephone access; personal care supplies and vitamins; transportation and emergency rental assistance; emergency clothing and blankets; comprehensive social service referrals; individualized case management; employment assistance and workshops; and daily educational and enrichment activities.

Tiffany Parker, Board President, described the need to move to a more positive and inclusive name. “Our new name more fully aligns with the values and services that we have been providing since we opened our doors almost 30 years ago.” Together with the individuals we serve; our volunteers, partner organizations, and supporters — Thrive DC will continue to work to prevent and end homelessness in District of Columbia.
